What to Expect on Nursery Photo Day – A Parent’s Guide
Nursery photo day is a milestone moment — but for many parents, it can feel like a big question mark. What should they wear? Will they smile? Will they sit still?!
With over 18 years of experience photographing little ones across Essex, I’ve learned that the secret to great portraits is this: keep it calm, keep it fun, and always follow the child’s lead.
Here’s what to expect and how to prepare for a smooth and joyful photo day:
✨ What to Wear Simple, timeless outfits always photograph best. Choose soft colours or small prints that won’t overpower your child’s features. Avoid large logos or neon shades. And don’t worry about shoes — many portraits are taken seated or close-up!
📸 On the Day I arrive early and work quietly, blending into the nursery setting. Children are photographed individually at their own pace — no pressure, no rush. I use gentle guidance, toys, and lots of patience to bring out natural smiles (even from the shy ones).
🎓 Graduation Options If your child is leaving nursery this year, we may also photograph them in a cap and gown — a beautiful keepsake for you and a proud moment for them!
💡 Tip for Parents If your little one is nervous, feel free to pop a comfort toy in their bag. We can always incorporate it into the session if needed.
📥 After the Shoot You’ll receive an online gallery link from your nursery, where you can view and order your favourite portraits directly — no need for envelopes or order forms.
Whether it’s their first photo or their last day in nursery, I feel so honoured to capture these precious moments for your family.
